Issue #5
"Cucuy Issue"

For many of us, this month marks the beginning of the best time of year: Halloween season. We set up our twelve-foot skeletons, scour thrift stores for vintage decorations, cozy up and watch “Halloween” for the millionth time, and much more. September also marks the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month! While they prepare for the spooky season, many are also celebrating their Hispanic and Latino history and culture. Latino creatives have brought influential literature and film to the horror scene. Books such as Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova have taken the internet by storm. Even in film, Demián Rugna has brought terrifying, new ideas to the horror genre with When Evil Lurks.

I’m incredibly honored to introduce our TWO guest columnists this month, Ashley Saywers (@coffeeandcuentos) and Mikey Peralta Jr. (@mikeyperaltajr). Ashley is the co-owner of Night Worms, a horror subscription service, alongside Sadie Hartman. Mikey has written for the infamous Dread Central, and his impressive portfolio covers important topics in the genre. From 10 Mexican Horror Films That Have Shaped The Genre to The 6 Best Female Characters in Latin American Horror and Netflix’s Newest Mexican Horror Film Will Leave You Feeling Cursed, you’re bound to find your next horror film from his recommendations!

This issue is named after “El Cucuy” or “El Coco,” a mythical ghost-like creature, similar to the American Boogeyman. El Cucuy is found all over Latin America and Spain, scaring disobedient children into behaving. With that, I will leave you to enjoy The Cucuy Issue!  So before you snuggle up for the night to read this month’s issue, be sure to check under your bed…

All my love,
-Elli, editor-in-chief
